Seeing the Face of God

Doctrine and Covenant 93 opens with this glorious promise:

Verily, thus saith the Lord: It shall come to pass that every soul who forsaketh his sins and cometh unto me, and calleth on my name, and obeyeth my voice, and keepeth my commandments, shall see my face and know that I am;

Doctrine and Covenants 93:1

The verse has a simple structure: If we do five things, we will receive two unfathomable blessings. Every one of these components has a Book of Mormon precedent:

If we will…

  1. Forsake our sinsMosiah 4:10; Alma 39:9; 3 Nephi 5:3
  2. Come unto ChristJacob 1:7; Omni 1:26; Moroni 10:30, 32
  3. Call on His nameAlma 9:17; 12:30; 17:4; 22:6
  4. Obey His voiceAlma 5:37-38, 60; Helaman 12:8-13, 23
  5. Keep His commandmentsMosiah 2:22; 18:10; Moroni 4:3

…then we will…

  1. See His faceEnos 1:27; Ether 3:13, 20; 12:39
  2. Know that He is3 Nephi 12:1-2; Moroni 10:7

The promise is real, but seeing and knowing Him is so much more than simply being in His presence. As Elder Neil L. Andersen explained, “There are many different ways to see the face of Christ” (“Temples, Houses of the Lord Dotting the Earth,” General Conference, April 2024). He referenced the following explanation by Elder David B. Haight:

It is true that some have actually seen the Savior, but when one consults the dictionary, he learns that there are many other meanings of the word see, such as coming to know Him, discerning Him, recognizing Him and His work, perceiving His importance, or coming to understand Him.

Temples and Work Therein,” General Conference, April 1990

Today, I will be grateful for the Savior’s promise that those who follow Him will come to know Him. I will remember that “seeing His face and knowing that He is” implies a level of spiritual sensitivity and wisdom which I can only achieve by His grace.
