After Moses rebuked the people for worshipping the golden calf, God reaffirmed His mercy and willingness to forgive. Subsequent Old Testament authors, Book of Mormon prophets, and modern prophets have all echoed this truth. We can repent with confidence, knowing that God is "merciful and gracious."
Seeing the Face of God
The first verse of Doctrine and Covenants 93 lays out a simple formula: Those who follow Christ will come to know Him. He promises that we will "see [His] face and know that [He is]," which implies far more than being in His presence. It means that we will understand and recognize Him.
Preparing the Way of the Lord
Isaiah prophesied that a messenger would cry, "Prepare ye the way of the Lord." This prophecy applies not only to John the Baptist but to all of us. We prepare for the Second Coming of Jesus Christ by being peacemakers, praying for charity, garnishing our thoughts with virtue, and spending more time in the temple.
Wickedness
The Book of Mormon teaches several principles which can help us navigate environments where people are making wrong choices. 1. We are all wicked. 2. Wickedness is not binary. 3. Wickedness need not be permanent. 4. As we become less wicked, God can entrust us with more responsibilities.
Zeezrom and the Mob
Mob mentality means making decisions based on the expectations of a group. The mob in Ammonihah couldn't be convinced by a second witness (Amulek), a third witness (Zeezrom) or a miracle (deliverance from prison). We must make independent decisions.
Being an Amulek
It's relatively easy to discount a testimony from a stranger. When a friend or neighbor shares their personal experience, it can be more impactful. Like Amulek, we can help our friends open their hearts to God by sharing our experiences with the gospel.
Weakness vs. Rebellion
God distinguishes between unintentional errors (sinning in ignorance) and intentional ones (sinning against light and knowledge). He can help us overcome both, but the repentance process may be different when we need to change our desires and motives.
Mercy
1. God is merciful. 2. He extends "arms of mercy" toward us. 3. The Savior's bowels are filled with mercy because of what He suffered. 4. He earned the right to offer us mercy. We claim that mercy by repenting. 5. Mercy is central to God's plan for us.
Testimony of Jesus = Spirit of Prophecy
An angel told John that the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy. The only way we can be sure that Jesus is our Savior is by direct, personal revelation from God. Therefore, the people who have that testimony are the people who receive revelation.
They Know Not
Acknowledging the boundaries of human knowledge can help us forgive. Jesus prayed, "Father, forgive them for they know not what they do." We can also extend grace to others by assuming they will do better when they know better.
