When Alma faced a difficult decision as the leader of the church, he went to the Lord in prayer. He “poured out his whole soul to God,” asking for guidance (Mosiah 26:13-14).
In response, he received an answer from God. Four times in His response, the Lord called Alma “blessed,” because of good things he had done: He had exercised faith in the words of the prophet Abinadi, baptized the people who believed his words, established a church, and now had asked for further guidance on how to lead the church (Mosiah 26:15-19).
In our most recent general conference, President Russell M. Nelson reiterated some counsel he had given us previously:
I renew my plea for you to do whatever it takes to increase your spiritual capacity to receive personal revelation.
Doing so will help you know how to move ahead with your life, what to do during times of crisis, and how to discern and avoid the temptations and the deceptions of the adversary.

Today, I will follow Alma’s example of diligent effort to hear the word of the Lord by praying diligently to receive guidance from Him. I will remember that He wants me to seek this guidance and that He will bless me for doing so.
