40 And he loveth those who will have him to be their God. Behold, he loved our fathers, and he covenanted with them, yea, even Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; and he remembered the covenants which he had made; wherefore, he did bring them out of the land of Egypt.
The first thing we need to know about covenants is that God always keeps His word. When we enter a covenant with Him, we can have confidence that He will fulfill His promises to us.
In the passage above, Nephi has received a commandment to build a ship to cross the ocean with his family. Nephi’s brothers think the project is preposterous. He has no experience with shipbuilding and they are far from civilization. Nephi reminds them how God fulfilled his covenants with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob through miraculous means. He draws confidence from those stories, and concludes, “if the Lord has such great power, and has wrought so many miracles among the children of men, how is it that he cannot instruct me, that I should build a ship?” (1 Nephi 17:51)
Today, I will remember how God has fulfilled His promises to others in the past. I will draw confidence from those stories to help me have faith in the promises God has made to me.
