Swallowed up in the Joy of Christ – Alma 31:38

38 And the Lord provided for them that they should hunger not, neither should they thirst; yea, and he also gave them strength, that they should suffer no manner of afflictions, save it were swallowed up in the joy of Christ. Now this was according to the prayer of Alma; and this because he prayed in faith.

Alma’s prayer of faith resulted in the missionaries receiving great blessings. Their needs were provided for, so they didn’t hunger nor thirst. And they were filled with the strength of the Lord, which enabled them to endure their afflictions well. I like Mormon’s statement that their afflictions “were swallowed up in the joy of Christ.”
Today, I will remember that the joy of the gospel can “swallow up” the challenges I face. If I can exercise my faith and maintain the companionship of the Holy Ghost, it will help me see my trials with an eternal perspective, which will help me to weather the storms of life without being overcome by them.
