Let Your Light So Shine – 3 Nephi 12:14-16

14 Verily, verily, I say unto you, I give unto you to be the light of this people. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hid.
15 Behold, do men light a candle and put it under a bushel? Nay, but on a candlestick, and it giveth light to all that are in the house;
16 Therefore let your light so shine before this people, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father who is in heaven.
(3 Nephi 12:14-16)

About 150 years before the birth of Jesus Christ, the prophet Abinadi had testified, “He is the light and the life of the world” (Mosiah 16:9). Following His death, the Savior used the same phrase to identify Himself to the Nephites and the Lamanites, both before He appeared to them and immediately after descending from heaven. (See 3 Nephi 9:183 Nephi 11:11.)

Shortly afterward, He gave them the admonition in the passage above: be a light. Don’t hide your good works. Let them shine, and let them bring glory to God.

In 2015, President Thomas S. Monson taught us that we become a light to others simply by living according to the teachings of the gospel:

My brothers and sisters, our opportunities to shine surround us each day, in whatever circumstance we find ourselves. As we follow the example of the Savior, ours will be the opportunity to be a light in the lives of others, whether they be our own family members and friends, our co-workers, mere acquaintances, or total strangers.
To each of you, I say that you are a son or daughter of our Heavenly Father. You have come from His presence to live on this earth for a season, to reflect the Savior’s love and teachings, and to bravely let your light shine for all to see…. That each of us within the sound of my voice may pledge to follow Him, thus becoming a shining light to the world, is my prayer” (“Be an Example and a Light,” General Conference, October 2015).

Today, I will choose to “let [my] light…shine.” I will strive to live according to the teachings of the Savior in order to invite His light into my life. Through my words, actions, and thoughts, I will do what I can to share that light with the people around me throughout the day.
