Thou Hast Suffered Afflictions – 2 Nephi 2:1-2

1 And now, Jacob, I speak unto you: Thou art my firstborn in the days of my tribulation in the wilderness. And behold, in thy childhood thou hast suffered afflictions and much sorrow, because of the rudeness of thy brethren.
2 Nevertheless, Jacob, my firstborn in the wilderness, thou knowest the greatness of God; and he shall consecrate thine afflictions for thy gain.
Lehi expresses love for his son Jacob in two ways in these verses:
  1. He acknowledges the challenges Jacob has faced. I appreciate it when other people recognize my challenges, even when they can’t do anything to remove those challenges.
  2. He expresses confidence that the Lord will bless Jacob. I appreciate encouragement from others who think highly of me and have strong faith in Heavenly Father.
Today, I will strive to follow Lehi’s example by expressing love to my children. I will acknowledge the unique challenges they each face, and will not minimize their trials. I will also express my confidence in them and my optimism that they will be blessed by the Lord to find success and happiness.
