Alma 22 – Mission to the Lamanites: Aaron Teaches Lamoni’s Father

Alma 21Alma 23

Aaron travels to the land of Nephi to teach Lamoni’s father. He covers much the same content which Ammon covered when he taught Lamoni (see Alma 18:24-29), including God and His plan, the creation of the earth, and the Fall of Adam and Eve. Like Lamoni, the king prays and falls to the ground unconscious. When his wife, the queen, becomes frightened and angry, Aaron raises the king from the ground. He testifies to the multitude who has gathered, and they are “pacified” toward Aaron.

Chapter Outline

  1. Aaron teaches Lamoni’s father about God and the plan of redemption (v. 1-14)
  2. The king prays for forgiveness and falls to the ground unconscious (v. 15-18)
  3. The queen becomes angry; Aaron raises the king from the ground, who testifies to the people who have gathered (v. 19-26)
  4. Discussion of Lamanite geography, from a Nephite perspective (v. 27-35)

My Takeaways

  1. God has missions for each of us, so we shouldn’t be envious when someone else is called to serve in “another way.” One reason for this is that we may be uniquely positioned to connect with specific people.
  2. We don’t have to be sure that God exists before we begin praying to Him.
  3. Abandoning our sins may be harder than giving up possessions, but that is what we must do in order to receive God’s grace.

“Another Way” – Alma 22:4

When Aaron visited the father of King Lamoni, who was “king over all the land” (Alma 20:8), the king was initially disappointed. He had invited Aaron’s brother Ammon to visit him and to teach him the gospel (Alma 20:27). He was willing to speak with Aaron, but he asked why Ammon had not come with…

I Will Believe – Alma 22:7-8

7 And Aaron answered him and said unto him: Believest thou that there is a God? And the king said: I know that the Amalekites say that there is a God, and I have granted unto them that they should build sanctuaries, that they may assemble themselves together to worship him. And if now thou…

“Aaron Hath Told Me”

The world rewards cynicism, but the Lord rewards trust. Lamoni’s wife believed the words of Ammon with no other evidence. Lamoni’s father prayed, “O God, Aaron hath told me that there is a God.” We invite His power into our lives when we trust Him.

The Image of God

So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. Genesis 1:27 How much are we like God? We see daily evidence of how far we—and the people around us—fall short of perfection. So how can we think we have anything in common with a perfect Being?…

“Swallowed Up” – Alma 27:28

Isaiah prophesied that God would “swallow up death in victory” (Isaiah 25:8). Aaron borrowed this terminology when he taught the king of the Lamanites that Christ would “[break] the bands of death,,,and that the sting of death should be swallowed up in the hopes of glory” (Alma 22:14). This was more than a theoretical concept.…
