1 Nephi 19 – Nephi Teaches His Brothers

1 Nephi 181 Nephi 20

People reject valuable things. Nephi was attuned to this reality as he painstakingly engraved important messages from God on metal plates. Even the God of Israel Himself, Nephi wrote, would be scourged, smitten, and crucified. But there is another side to the story. When people return to God, He welcomes them back, honoring the covenants He has made with them. Nephi read the scriptures to his brothers to emphasize God’s love, so that they could have hope.

Chapter Outline

  1. Third Editorial Note: Two sets of plates (v. 1-6). (See 1 Nephi 6 and 1 Nephi 9.)

  3. When Israel returns to God, He will remember His covenants (v. 15-21).

He Suffereth It

The word “suffer” can have 2 meanings in English: (1) endure pain, and (2) allow or permit. When Nephi tells us that Jesus suffered being smitten, scourged, and spat upon, he meant both. Jesus endured unfathomable pain for us, and He did it willingly.

Jeremiah bought land. Lovingkindness

Can a person be kind without being loving? Of course they can; we have all seen it. Perhaps they were kind begrudgingly, out of a sense of duty. Perhaps they were kind in a general sense, such as donating money to a charity, but without any particular commitment to the specific individuals they were helping.…

All Scripture Is Profitable

A Light Thing

Overemphasizing trivial things can create unnecessary anxiety. But trivializing things that really are important can be much more dangerous. After the First Vision, Joseph Smith was surprised when a religious leader treated his experience “not only lightly, but with great contempt” (Joseph Smith—History 1:21). Joseph knew better than to deny or deemphasize his experience. He…

“In the Very Hour”

It is more important to be prepared than to have a plan. Plans rely on assumptions about things we can’t control. The most brittle plans rely heavily on these assumptions, while more resilient plans allow for adaptation under changing circumstances. A good plan recognizes that the participants will be actors, not merely executors, and will…
