24 Wherefore I spake unto them, saying: Hear ye the words of the prophet, ye who are a remnant of the house of Israel, a branch who have been broken off; hear ye the words of the prophet, which were written unto all the house of Israel, and liken them unto yourselves, that ye may have hope as well as your brethren from whom ye have been broken off; for after this manner has the prophet written.
An important reason why we study the scriptures and liken them to ourselves is so that we can have hope. When we recognize that the teachings of ancient prophets like Isaiah can have useful application in our modern lives, we are able to build on a solid foundation of eternal principles. When we realize that the people in the scriptures are not so different from us, we draw strength from their examples and from the miracles they experienced as they followed the Savior. As Nephi said, by hearing the words of the prophet and likening them unto ourselves, we can have hope that the promises of the Lord will be fulfilled in our lives just as they are in the lives of others.
Today, I will draw strength from my scripture study. I will remember that the scriptures speak to all of Heavenly Father’s children, and that therefore they speak to me. I will let the scriptures buoy me up, lift my spirits and give me hope.
