In an 1829 revelation to Oliver Cowdery and David Whitmer, the Lord shared a fundamental truth with profound significance for each of our lives:
Remember the worth of souls is great in the sight of God.
Doctrine and Covenants 18:10
What would happen if we actually remembered that fact every day? How would we treat one another? How would we treat ourselves? How would our prayers be different?
Alma was repulsed by the prayer of the Zoramites, yet in his own prayer for them, he said, “Behold, O Lord, their souls are precious” (Alma 31:35). This important reminder gave perspective and courage to Alma and his fellow missionaries as they began to teach.
Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf said:
This is a paradox of man: compared to God, man is nothing; yet we are everything to God. While against the backdrop of infinite creation we may appear to be nothing, we have a spark of eternal fire burning within our breast. We have the incomprehensible promise of exaltation—worlds without end—within our grasp. And it is God’s great desire to help us reach it.
“You Matter to Him,” General Conference, October 2011
Today, I will remember the infinite worth of each child of God. I will allow that awareness to influence my interactions with others, my own self-perception, and my prayers.
