3 And now because of their unbelief they could not understand the word of God; and their hearts were hardened.
Mormon teaches us a profound principle as he describes some of the people of King Mosiah. They were young, he tells us, when King Benjamin gave his speech. They were too young to grasp its meaning and to experience the conversion all of the older people experienced at that time. As they grew, they had a hard time believing the principles of the gospel accepted by their parents. Specifically, they didn’t believe in Jesus Christ and in the resurrection. Here is the principle: because they didn’t believe, they couldn’t understand. If we refuse to believe and harden our hearts, we limit our ability to understand the truths of the gospel.
As L. Whitney Clayton taught:
Every day each of us faces a test. It is the test of our lifetimes: will we choose to believe in Him and allow the light of His gospel to grow within us, or will we refuse to believe and insist on traveling alone in the dark? The Savior provides His gospel as a light to guide those who choose to believe in and follow Him (“Choose to Believe,” General Conference, April 2015).
Today I will choose to believe. I will open my mind and my heart to the truths of the gospel, knowing that true understanding of spiritual truths begins with a willingness to believe.
