The Joy of the Saints – Enos 1:2-4

2 And I will tell you of the wrestle which I had before God, before I received a remission of my sins.
3 Behold, I went to hunt beasts in the forests; and the words which I had often heard my father speak concerning eternal life, and the joy of the saints, sunk deep into my heart.
4 And my soul hungered; and I kneeled down before my Maker, and I cried unto him in mighty prayer and supplication for mine own soul; and all the day long did I cry unto him; yea, and when the night came I did still raise my voice high that it reached the heavens.
Today, I’ve been thinking about an important aspect of repentance which we learn from Enos’s account. Repentance is motivated by a desired outcome, not just by an aversion to a current reality. In other words, a truly repentant person is focused on the blessings which repantance can bring, including “eternal life and the joy of the saints,” not on the sins he or she is trying to overcome. Yes, there must be a full acknowledgement of the sins, but with the goal of moving on to something better.
Today, I will think about the positive outcomes of repentance. I will remember that focusing on those outcomes can lead me to true and heartfelt repentance.
