20 And thus in the commencement of the ninth year of the reign of the judges over the people of Nephi, Alma delivered up the judgment-seat to Nephihah, and confined himself wholly to the high priesthood of the holy order of God, to the testimony of the word, according to the spirit of revelation and prophecy.
- The holy order of God – The priesthood is the way God organizes His work on earth. By participating in priesthood-directed activities, we become aligned with God’s way of doing things, just like a piece of metal becomes magnetized when it is exposed for an extended period of time to a strong magnet.
- The testimony of the word – The priesthood gives us authority to act in the name of God and to stand as His witnesses. This gives us not only the authority but also the responsibility to bear testimony of the truths we know, so that others can be blessed by those truths as we have been.
- The spirit of revelation and prophecy – When we act under priesthood authority, we are doing the work of the Lord. We simply can’t do that work on our own. It is too important and too difficult for mortals to do alone. Fortunately, as Thomas S. Monson has taught us, “when we are on the Lord’s errand, we are entitled to the Lord’s help” (“To Learn to Do, to Be,” General Conference, October 2008). We can receive revelation to understand how to fulfill our responsibilities.
