Whosever Among You Borroweth – Mosiah 4:28

28 And I would that ye should remember, that whosoever among you borroweth of his neighbor should return the thing that he borroweth, according as he doth agree, or else thou shalt commit sin; and perhaps thou shalt cause thy neighbor to commit sin also.

We all know that it is dishonest to borrow something and not return it. In this verse, King Benjamin reminds us not to be sloppy in those transactions. Friends might reasonably assume a level of informality when lending items to each other. There may not be a clear due date, for example. As King Benjamin points out, the borrower needs to take responsibility for fulfilling the implicit agreement and return the item within a reasonable time. Not to do so is a sin, however innocuous it may seem. By the same token, if we promise to do something for a family member or a neighbor, we ought to take that obligation seriously, just as we would any other agreement.
Today, I will remember to be conscientious in fulfilling agreements with my friends and family. I will remember that a truly honest person keeps his or her word, even in less formal settings and relationships.
