6 Now, this was what Ammon desired, for he knew that king Lamoni was under the power of God; he knew that the dark veil of unbelief was being cast away from his mind, and the light which did light up his mind, which was the light of the glory of God, which was a marvelous light of his goodness–yea, this light had infused such joy into his soul, the cloud of darkness having been dispelled, and that the light of everlasting life was lit up in his soul, yea, he knew that this had overcome his natural frame, and he was carried away in God–
After hearing Ammon preach the gospel, King Lamoni prayed for mercy. Then “he fell unto the earth, as if he were dead,” and he remained unconscious for 2 days (Alma 18:42-43
). Ammon knew what was happening: Lamoni was experiencing a transformation by the power of God. I love the descriptions of what was happening:
- “The dark veil of unbelief was being cast away from his mind.”
- As a result, his mind was filled with “the light of the glory of God.”
- That light had not only lit up his mind, but it “had infused such joy into his soul.”
- “The cloud of darkness [was] dispelled, and…the light of everlasting life was lit up in his soul.”
The imagery highlights an important fact: the power of God operates on our mind and on our heart simultaneously. As we know more, we also feel more. The two go hand in hand.
Furthermore, the barriers which prevent us from experiencing his power are within us. A hard heart and a darkened mind go together. When our minds are enlightened, we are filled with joy.
I’m grateful to know that the power of God can change my mind and my heart. Today, I will pray for help to open my heart and my mind so that I can experience His power in my life.
