1 And now it came to pass that after I, Nephi, had read these things which were engraven upon the plates of brass, my brethren came unto me and said unto me: What meaneth these things which ye have read? Behold, are they to be understood according to things which are spiritual, which shall come to pass according to the spirit and not the flesh?
2 And I, Nephi, said unto them: Behold they were manifest unto the prophet by the voice of the Spirit; for by the Spirit are all things made known unto the prophets, which shall come upon the children of men according to the flesh.
Nephi answers this question with clarity:
- Yes, the words of the prophets are spiritual. By definition, a prophet learns things through the Spirit of the Lord which we cannot learn through our physical senses alone.
- However, the fact that these truths are understood spiritually does not imply that they are disconnected from our physical lives. In fact, the opposite is true. The Lord reveals to the prophet through the Spirit things which will happen to us in the flesh. The boundary between physical and spiritual things is not as rigid as was implied in the question. In fact, the things God reveals to us through His prophets are relevant to the tangible challenges we face every day.
I’m grateful that our Heavenly Father reveals truths to His prophets by His Spirit. I’m grateful that those truths provide practical guidance which help us “according to the flesh.”
