20 And as the remainder of our army were about to give way before the Lamanites, behold, those two thousand and sixty were firm and undaunted.
21 Yea, and they did obey and observe to perform every word of command with exactness; yea, and even according to their faith it was done unto them; and I did remember the words which they said unto me that their mothers had taught them.
When I’ve read this passage in the past, I’ve usually focused on the exact obedience of the sons of Helaman. That precision in following orders enabled them to act as a single, unified force, which made them far more powerful than they would have been as a mere collection of individuals, each acting independently.
In addition, today I’m thinking about Mormon’s statement that when the older, more experienced troops were about to give up in the face of a formidable enemy, these young and faithful soldiers were “firm and undaunted.” Later in the chapter, as he tries to explain the miracle that none of these young men died in this fierce battle, he says, “they are young, and their minds are firm, and they do put their trust in God continually” (Alma 57:27).
Today, I will be “firm and undaunted.” I will remember that an important part of exercising faith in God is not giving up, even when challenges seem insurmountable. Like the sons of Helaman, I will keep going, keep doing the things I know I should do, keep trusting in God that I will be victorious in the end.
