My Faith Began to Be Unshaken – Enos 1:11

11 And after I, Enos, had heard these words, my faith began to be unshaken in the Lord; and I prayed unto him with many long strugglings for my brethren, the Lamanites.

Enos’s faith grew each time his prayers were answered until it eventually became “unshaken.” Notice how his language mirrors his father, Jacob, who said that he “could not be shaken” because of the revelations he had received (Jacob 7:5, see also Jacob 4:6). Our faith grows as we exercise it and receive the consequent blessings.
But when your prayers are answered, isn’t your faith converted to knowledge? The answer is yes, as the prophet Alma explained to the Zoramites: “your knowledge is perfect in that thing, and your faith is dormant” (Alma 32:34). Does that knowledge eliminate your need for faith? Alma’s answer: “Nay, neither must you lay aside your faith” (Alma 32:36). Here’s why: when we exercise faith to pray and receive an answer, we no longer need to exercise faith about that particular question or problem, because we now know the answer. But our lives are filled with uncertainty, and there are many other questions and problems which will require our continued faith. The good news is that, as Enos and Jacob show us, spiritual experiences bolster our faith which can create a virtuous cycle in our lives: exercising our faith leads to spiritual knowledge which in turn increases our faith.
Today, as I act in faith, I will remember the many times my faith has been rewarded and my prayers have been answered in the past, recognizing that an awareness of those experiences can strengthen my faith today.
