6 Forasmuch as this people refuseth the waters of Shiloah that go softly, and rejoice in Rezin and Remaliah’s son;
7 Now therefore, behold, the Lord bringeth up upon them the waters of the river, strong and many, even the king of Assyria and all his glory; and he shall come up over all his channels, and go over all his banks.

How easy it is to ignore the quiet things around us because of our fascination with the noise of the world! So much excitement surrounds us that we are easily swept up and lose our grounding and our protection.
The fountain of Shiloah (also called the pool of Siloam) is a man-made reservoir of fresh water which is fed by the spring of Gihon. In Isaiah’s time, King Hezekiah built a tunnel under the wall of the city, allowing the water from the spring to flow into the the city, filling the pool, and thus providing a source of water in case of a siege of the city by a foreign army (2 Kings 20:20, 2 Chronicles 32:4, 30).
Isaiah’s message to the people of Jerusalem is simple: if you reject the quiet things which can provide you with peace and safety and instead choose to place your faith in worldly power, you will learn how devastating that worldly power can be when it turns against you. Worldly power is not reliable and does not reward loyalty (Alma 30:60).
When I think of the “waters of Shiloah,” I think of personal prayers and quiet pondering when I am not feeling rushed or anxious. Those activities bring the Spirit of the Lord into my life, which gives me spiritual nourishment and strength, even in the midst of a very busy and stressful life.
