Make Me Not a Ruler – 2 Nephi 13:5-7

5 And the people shall be oppressed, every one by another, and every one by his neighbor; the child shall behave himself proudly against the ancient, and the base against the honorable.
6 When a man shall take hold of his brother of the house of his father, and shall say: Thou hast clothing, be thou our ruler, and let not this ruin come under thy hand–
7 In that day shall he swear, saying: I will not be a healer; for in my house there is neither bread nor clothing; make me not a ruler of the people.
In a culture where no one is supportive of their leaders, why would anyone want to be a leader?  Mormon was a great leader whose ability to succeed was severely constrained by the wickedness of the people he led (Mormon 3:12-16). Nephi was chosen by the Lord to be a “ruler and a teacher” over Laman and Lemuel, but how effectively could he lead them when they were unwilling to follow (1 Nephi 2:22-23, 1 Nephi 3:29)?
Today I will strive to contribute to the success of all of the organizations that I belong to, regardless of my role.  I will strive to support my leaders and to help them be successful.  I will remember that it’s not all about the leader–it’s about the contribution of every member of the team.
