17 O ye fair ones, how could ye have departed from the ways of the Lord! O ye fair ones, how could ye have rejected that Jesus, who stood with open arms to receive you!
(Mormon 6:17)
What a sad picture Mormon paints in these chapters! Jesus Christ, who is so powerful that He can roll the earth like a scroll, stands waiting to clasp Mormon’s people in His arms. He would like to lead them as a good shepherd leads His flock–not with coercion but by gentle persuasion. And yet they reject the offer, placing themselves instead in a situation where they are blown about like chaff in the wind. What a monumental failure to perceive the way things really are! No wonder it is so important to be “sober” and “quick to observe,” as was Mormon. No wonder ingratitude and light-mindlessness are so dangerous! When we have a broad perspective and are able to sense the reasons behind the things we experience, we are much more likely to accept the help which stands waiting for us with open arms!
