In the book of Omni, Amaleki told us about a group of people who made two attempts to return to the land of Nephi. The first attempt ended tragically with bloodshed, and the outcome of the second was unknown. (See Omni 1:27-30.)
When King Mosiah became king, he sent a search party led by a man named Ammon to find this group of immigrants. They found them in bondage and learned about their history. (See Mosiah 7:21-28.)
Now, Mormon shares the record of Limhi’s grandfather, Zeniff, who led the original migration. Zeniff blames himself for his naive trust in the Lamanite king which has placed his people in danger, but he testifies that they were strengthened by the Lord to defend themselves against Lamanite attacks.

My Takeaways
- It’s important to adjust our mental models as we encounter new information.
- It’s good to pursue important goals, but we should not let our enthusiasm override our reason.
- Being spiritually prepared is more important than being physically prepared

That Space Between Naïveté and Paranoia
Zeniff trusted people, and the king of the Lamanites exploited that trust. His grandson Limhi was far more cautious. We need to find a balance: set appropriate boundaries and mitigate risks, but remember that trust is the lifeblood of relationships.

How Can I Avoid Overzealousness?
zeal – Great energy or enthusiasm in pursuit of a cause or an objective (Oxford English Dictionary) When the Nephites welcomed a large number of Lamanite refugees into their land, they not only had to give them a place to live; they also had to provide protection for them. That’s because these Lamanites had taken…

How Should We Respond When Others Threaten or Attack Us?
As I wrote yesterday, we need to forgive others in order to be forgiven by God. That’s because an unforgiving heart is unable to receive God’s healing power. But what should we do when we, or the people we are responsible for, are in danger? How can we protect and defend ourselves and them without…
❖ Zeniff and his people defend themselves – Mosiah 9:16-19
“In the Strength of the Lord”
Zeniff and his people were able do defend themselves because they fought “in the strength of the Lord.” When they later relied on their own strength, they were conquered. We need God’s enabling power in order to overcome challenges and achieve our goals.
