Alma 19 – Mission to the Lamanites: Conversion of Lamoni and His Household

Alma 18Alma 20

The unconscious state of Lamoni is a test of faith for his wife. Her advisors tell her that he is dead, but that doesn’t seem right to her. Ammon assures her that Lamoni will arise the following day, and she believes him.

When Lamoni awakes, his testimony causes his entire household and Ammon to fall into the same state of unconsciousness. All except one: a servant of the queen named Abish gathers a multitude to see the miracle. Then, when the multitude fails to understand what is happening and becomes contentious, she raises the queen from the ground, who then raises her husband. Many of those present are converted by the testimonies of the king and queen.

Chapter Outline

  1. The queen exercises faith in Ammon’s words (v. 1-10)
  2. The king testifies, and his household is overpowered by the Spirit (v. 11-16)
  3. Abish gathers a multitude, many of whom are also converted (v. 17-36)

My Takeaways

  1. We need to trust the truths we have learned by our own experience.
  2. Take advantage of opportunities to teach and invite when they appear.
  3. Lead people to experiences which will enable them to experience the Spirit of the Lord.

The Role of Women in the Conversion of Lamoni’s People

I’ve been thinking today about the role of women in the conversion of King Lamoni’s people. Here are some observations: After Ammon taught the gospel to Lamoni, the king prayed for mercy. Immediately, “he fell unto the earth, as if he were dead.” In response, “his servants took him and carried him in unto his…

What Can We Learn from the Women in the Book of Mormon?

Today, I have been pondering the lessons I have learned from some of the women in the Book of Mormon. Here are a few of those lessons: “Now I know of a surety…” Sariah trusted the revelations received by her husband, Lehi. She, along with the rest of the family, abandoned her home in Jerusalem…

“To Me He Doth Not Stink” – Alma 19:5

How do we know what we know? To what degree is our knowledge based on our personal experience and to what degree is it based on what other people tell us? We all know that our own personal experience provides insufficient information to direct all of our decisions. That’s why we read books, ask advice…

The Light of the Glory of God – Alma 19:6

6 Now, this was what Ammon desired, for he knew that king Lamoni was under the power of God; he knew that the dark veil of unbelief was being cast away from his mind, and the light which did light up his mind, which was the light of the glory of God, which was a…

She Ran Forth from House to House – Alma 19:16-17

16 And it came to pass that they did call on the name of the Lord, in their might, even until they had all fallen to the earth, save it were one of the Lamanitish women, whose name was Abish, she having been converted unto the Lord for many years, on account of a remarkable…

Mosiah Trusted Him unto the Lord – Alma 19:22-23

22 Now, one of them, whose brother had been slain with the sword of Ammon, being exceedingly angry with Ammon, drew his sword and went forth that he might let it fall upon Ammon, to slay him; and as he lifted the sword to smite him, behold, he fell dead.23 Now we see that Ammon…

When She Saw the Contention – Alma 19:28-29

28 And thus the contention began to be exceedingly sharp among them. His Arm Is Extended to All People – Alma 19:36

36 And thus the work of the Lord did commence among the Lamanites; thus the Lord did begin to pour out his Spirit upon them; and we see that his arm is extended to all people who will repent and believe on his name.(Alma 19:36) When Ammon and his brothers started talking about traveling to…

Old Testament Foundations

“Would God My Lord Were With the Prophet!”

She was a young Israelite woman, who had been captured by the Syrian army and was now a slave in the house of Naaman. She felt empathy toward her master, who was captain of the Syrian army but who was afflicted with leprosy. She said to Naaman’s wife, “Would God my lord were with the prophet that is in…

Rending That Veil

After descending from Sinai, Moses had to wear a veil or the children of Israel would not come near him. Are we sometimes similarly hesitant to approach God? Moroni urged us to “rend that veil” which covers our heart.

Noonday

What we see is heavily influenced by who we are. If we are filled with light, we can see more clearly, even in darkness. But if we are filled with darkness, external light may not be very helpful. That is the message of several passages in the book of Isaiah. In chapter 58, for example,…

New Testament Parallels

Women in the Gospels

Here are some lessons I have learned from women who knew Jesus: Mary, mother of Jesus: Ponder things in your heart. The Samaritan woman: Testify and invite. Mary, Martha’s sister: Choose the good part. Mary Magdalene: Come to the tomb.

Anna, the Prophetess

Anna received a spiritual witness that Jesus was the Messiah, and she shared that testimony with others. Lamoni’s wife did the same. Those who obtain and share a testimony of Jesus are prophets and prophetesses.

So Great Faith

Jesus recognized an unusual manifestation of faith and praised the centurion. Ammon saw the same in the Lamanite queen. Strong faith can come from unlikely sources, and we would be wise to recognize and learn from it.
