3 Nephi 19 – Three Intercessory Prayers

3 Nephi 183 Nephi 20

After Jesus leaves, some people work all night to spread the news of His coming and to invite people to be there the next day. The following morning, the disciples divide the people who have gathered into twelve groups and teach them what Jesus had taught the prior day. The twelve disciples are also baptized and are filled with the Holy Ghost. Angels minister to them, and then Jesus returns.

He instructs the multitude to kneel down, and He offers three prayers. The first two are similar to the intercessary prayer He offered at the Last Supper. (See John 17.) The third is so marvelous that it can’t be written or spoken. Jesus explains that they were able to experience this because of their faith.

Chapter Outline

  1. Some people work all night gathering people (v. 1-3)
  2. The disciples teach and baptize (v. 4-14)
  3. Jesus prays three times, and His countenance shines upon the people (v. 15-36)

My Takeaways

  1. We can have spiritual experiences as we support other people in making covenants with God.
  2. We should pray that we may be one, even as Jesus Christ and His Father are one.

What Can We Learn from the Baptisms of the Twelve Disciples?

On the first day of the Savior’s visit to the American continent, He selected twelve men and gave them authority to baptize (3 Nephi 11:18-22). “That We May Be One” – 3 Nephi 19:23, 29

At the Last Supper, Jesus offered a prayer which is often called the Intercessory Prayer, because He pleaded with His Father on behalf of His apostles. In the following passage, He pleads not only for them but for all who believe in Him: Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through…

They Did Not Multiply Many Words – 3 Nephi 19:24

How Can I Have More Experiences with God?

My question today was inspired by a talk given by President Russell M. Nelson in the most recent general conference. He gave the following advice: Understand that in the absence of experiences with God, one can doubt the existence of God. So, put yourself in a position to begin having experiences with Him. Humble yourself.…

Why Did the Disciples Pray to Jesus in 3 Nephi 19?

During the first day of the Savior’s visit to the American continent, He taught the people to pray to Heavenly Father in His name (3 Nephi 18:19-21, 23, 30). This is consistent with His instructions to the twelve apostles at the Last Supper (John 14:13-14, John 15:16, John 16:23-26). The following morning, as they gathered…

Pray On!

Jesus prayed with His disciples in the Americas. For an extended time at the beginning of the second day, the people prayed. Jesus encouraged them with the words “Pray on.” Afterward, He encouraged them to continue to pray in their hearts.

Old Testament Foundations

“His Countenance Did Smile upon Them” – 3 Nephi 19:25

May the LORD bless you and protect you. May the LORD smile on you and be gracious to you. May the LORD show you his favor and give you his peace. The “Priestly Blessing,” Numbers 6:24-26, New Living Translation The word “smile” does not appear in either the Old Testament or the New Testament in…

“Tongue Cannot Speak the Words Which He Prayed” – 3 Nephi 19:32

On the first day of the Savior’s ministry on the American continent following His death and resurrection, He invited the multitude He was with to kneel on the ground. New Testament Parallels

“The Middle Wall of Partition”

The Atonement of Jesus Christ not only breaks down barriers between us and God, it also breaks down barriers between people. Paul said that Jesus “hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us.” He can help us become unified.

“That They May Also Be One”

Unity is very important to Jesus. At the Last Supper, He urged His apostles to be one. In His visit to the American continent, He made the same plea. His living representatives on the earth have also urged us to overcome contention and become one.
