Biblical Allusions in Doctrine and Covenants 133

The apostle Paul foresaw a time when God would “gather together in one all things in Christ” (Ephesians 1:10). The Savior illustrated how this is done when he visited Lehi’s descendants after His death and resurrection. He delivered a sermon in which He integrated passages from Isaiah, Micah, and Deuteronomy (3 Nephi 16, 20, 21, 22). He urged them to record the words of Samuel (3 Nephi 23:6-13). He recited for them some of the words of Malachi (3 Nephi 24, 25). And He “expounded all the scriptures in one” (3 Nephi 23:6, 14; 26:1-5).

In Doctrine and Covenants 133, we get another example of how the Savior integrates the words of multiple prophets in order to demonstrate the unity of His message. Nearly every one of the 74 verses in this section quotes a passage from the Bible, and many of those passages also appear in some form in the Book of Mormon. Here’s a list of those biblical allusions and corresponding Book of Mormon passages:

O Lord, thou shalt come down to make thy name known to thine adversaries, and all nations shall tremble at thy presence—

When thou doest terrible things, things they look not for;
Yea, when thou comest down, and the mountains flow down at thy presence
, thou shalt meet him who rejoiceth and worketh righteousness, who remembereth thee in thy ways.
For since the beginning of the world have not men heard nor perceived by the ear, neither hath any eye seen, O God, besides thee, how great things thou hast prepared for him that waiteth for thee.
Isaiah 64:1-5 (See also 1 Corinth 2:9)Oh that thou wouldest rend the heavens, that thou wouldest come down, that the mountains might flow down at thy presence,
As when the melting fire burneth, the fire causeth the waters to boil, to make thy name known to thine adversaries, that the nations may tremble at thy presence!
When thou didst terrible things which we looked not for, thou camest down, the mountains flowed down at thy presence.
For since the beginning of the world men have not heard, nor perceived by the ear, neither hath the eye seen, O God, beside thee, what he hath prepared for him that waiteth for him.
Thou meetest him that rejoiceth and worketh righteousness, those that remember thee in thy ways: behold, thou art wroth; for we have sinned: in those is continuance, and we shall be saved.
46-53And it shall be said: Who is this that cometh down from God in heaven with dyed garments; yea, from the regions which are not known, clothed in his glorious apparel, traveling in the greatness of his strength?
And he shall say: I am he who spake in righteousness, mighty to save.
And the Lord shall be red in his apparel, and his garments like him that treadeth in the wine-vat.

And so great shall be the glory of his presence that the sun shall hide his face in shame, and the moon shall withhold its light, and the stars shall be hurled from their places.
And his voice shall be heard: I have trodden the wine-press alone, and have brought judgment upon all people; and none were with me;
And I have trampled them in my fury, and I did tread upon them in mine anger, and their blood have I sprinkled upon my garments, and stained all my raiment
; for this was the day of vengeance which was in my heart.
And now the year of my redeemed is come; and they shall mention the loving kindness of their Lord, and all that he has bestowed upon them according to his goodness, and according to his loving kindness, forever and ever.

In all their afflictions he was afflicted. And the angel of his presence saved them; and in his love, and in his pity, he redeemed them, and bore them, and carried them all the days of old;
Isaiah 63:1-9, See also Matthew 24:29Who is this that cometh from Edom, with dyed garments from Bozrah? this that is glorious in his apparel, travelling in the greatness of his strength? I that speak in righteousness, mighty to save.
Wherefore art thou red in thine apparel, and thy garments like him that treadeth in the winefat?

I have trodden the winepress alone; and of the people there was none with me: for I will tread them in mine anger, and trample them in my fury; and their blood shall be sprinkled upon my garments, and I will stain all my raiment.
For the day of vengeance is in mine heart, and the year of my redeemed is come.
And I looked, and there was none to help; and I wondered that there was none to uphold: therefore mine own arm brought salvation unto me; and my fury, it upheld me.
And I will tread down the people in mine anger, and make them drunk in my fury, and I will bring down their strength to the earth.
I will mention the lovingkindnesses of the LORD, and the praises of the LORD, according to all that the LORD hath bestowed on us, and the great goodness toward the house of Israel, which he hath bestowed on them according to his mercies, and according to the multitude of his lovingkindnesses.
For he said, Surely they are my people, children that will not lie: so he was their Saviour.
In all their affliction he was afflicted, and the angel of his presence saved them: in his love and in his pity he redeemed them; and he bare them, and carried them all the days of old.
54Yea, and Enoch also, and they who were with him; the prophets who were before him; and Noah also, and they who were before him; and Moses also, and they who were before him;
55And from Moses to Elijah, and from Elijah to John, who were with Christ in his resurrection, and the holy apostles, with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, shall be in the presence of the Lamb.
56And the graves of the saints shall be opened; and they shall come forth and stand on the right hand of the Lamb, when he shall stand upon Mount Zion, and upon the holy city, the New Jerusalem; and they shall sing the song of the Lamb, day and night forever and ever.Ezekiel 37:12-13; Matthew 27:52Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, O my people, I will open your graves, and cause you to come up out of your graves, and bring you into the land of Israel.
And ye shall know that I am the LORD, when I have opened your graves, O my people, and brought you up out of your graves,

67-70When I called again there was none of you to answer; yet my arm was not shortened at all that I could not redeem, neither my power to deliver.
Behold, at my rebuke I dry up the sea. I make the rivers a wilderness; their fish stink, and die for thirst.
I clothe the heavens with blackness, and make sackcloth their covering.
And this shall ye have of my hand—ye shall lie down in sorrow.
Isaiah 50:2-3, 11Wherefore, when I came, was there no man? when I called, was there none to answer? Is my hand shortened at all, that it cannot redeem? or have I no power to deliver? behold, at my rebuke I dry up the sea, I make the rivers a wilderness: their fish stinketh, because there is no water, and dieth for thirst.
I clothe the heavens with blackness, and I make sackcloth their covering….
This shall ye have of mine hand; ye shall lie down in sorrow.
2 Nephi 7:2-3, 11

The revelation delivers a unified message: We need to prepare for the Savior’s return by disconnecting from the evils of the world, receiving and preaching the gospel, and repenting. But the revelation also teaches us an important principle which can help us study the scriptures more effectively: God’s message is unified. You can combine passages written by different prophets at different times in order to hear a composite message from God. The prophetic voice is a unified voice, because the words of prophets are inspired from heaven.

Today, as I study and ponder Doctrine and Covenants 133, I will be grateful for the unity of inspired words of prophets through the ages. I will remember that I can learn from prophets in every time and place, and that their combined testimony is the voice of God to me.
