24 And I said unto them that it was the word of God; and whoso would hearken unto the word of God, and would hold fast unto it, they would never perish; neither could the temptations and the fiery darts of the adversary overpower them unto blindness, to lead them away to destruction.
In Lehi’s dream, the mists of darkness represented the temptations of the devil. The rod of iron represented the word of God. Only those who chose to “hold fast” to it were able to navigate safely through the mist.
How often do we enter the mists? Our mortal brains have limited capacity, and so we can easily lose our eternal perspective in the fog created by the demands of daily life. How easily our judgement can become clouded and our focus too narrow. The looming deadline, the upcoming challenge, or the latest irritation can consume our thoughts and prompt short-sighted decisions.
No wonder we have been taught to study the word of God every day. Thomas S. Monson shared the role of the scriptures in his life:
The words of truth and inspiration found in our four standard works are prized possessions to me. I never tire of reading them. I am lifted spiritually whenever I search the scriptures. These holy words of truth and love give guidance to my life and point the way to eternal perfection (“We Never Walk Alone,” General Conference, October, 2013).
Today, I will hold fast to the word of God. I will study and ponder the scriptures so that I can maintain an eternal perspective and make wise decisions, even as I navigate the challenges of daily life.
