“Touch Them Not”

Moroni provides some specific instructions to Joseph Smith in an editorial note in the middle of the book of Ether. Speaking of the portion of the plates which would be sealed shut, he wrote, “touch them not in order that ye may translate; for that thing is forbidden you, except by and by it shall be wisdom in God” (Ether 5:1).

He had previously explained that the brother of Jared was commanded to write what he had learned in a vision but that those writings should be kept secret until after the Savior’s death and resurrection. (See Ether 4:1-2.) Moroni had access to those records, but the Lord commanded him to “hide them up again in the earth” (Ether 4:3), because of the unbelief of the people in his time.

Curiosity can be a powerful motivator. We can be easily distracted, particularly when information is being withheld from us. But as Moroni instructed Joseph, sometimes we just need to let those things go and act in accordance with our current knowledge.

Today, I will avoid being distracted by my curiosity. I will make the best decisions I can based on my current knowledge, while accepting that some things will only become clear to me over time.
