Lay Hold upon the Gospel of Christ – Mormon 7:8-10

8 Therefore repent, and be baptized in the name of Jesus, and lay hold upon the gospel of Christ, which shall be set before you, not only in this record but also in the record which shall come unto the Gentiles from the Jews, which record shall come from the Gentiles unto you.
9 For behold, this is written for the intent that ye may believe that; and if ye believe that ye will believe this also; and if ye believe this ye will know concerning your fathers, and also the marvelous works which were wrought by the power of God among them.
10 And ye will also know that ye are a remnant of the seed of Jacob; therefore ye are numbered among the people of the first covenant; and if it so be that ye believe in Christ, and are baptized, first with water, then with fire and with the Holy Ghost, following the example of our Savior, according to that which he hath commanded us, it shall be well with you in the day of judgment. Amen.

This is Mormon’s final statement to his readers before delivering the plates to his son, Moroni. Notice how clearly this final counsel references the three purposes of the Book of Mormon outlined on the title page:

Title Page
Mormon 7:8-10
1
To show unto the remnant of the house of Israel what great things the Lord hath done for their fathers.
If ye believe this ye will know concerning your fathers, and also the marvelous works which were wrought by the power of God among them.
2
That they may know the covenants of the Lord, that they are not cast off forever
And ye will also know that ye are a remnant of the seed of Jacob; therefore ye are numbered among the people of the first covenant
3
To the convincing of the Jew and Gentile that Jesus is the Christ, the Eternal God, manifesting himself unto all nations
Lay hold upon the gospel of Christ, which shall be set before you

I particularly like Mormon’s admonition to “lay hold upon the gospel of Christ.” The gospel, he tells us, is contained in both the Bible and in the Book of Mormon, and if we truly grasp what either book is teaching, we will believe the other. But we must do something. The ancient prophets have done their part. The scriptures are “set before [us].” Now, it is up to us. We must do the work required to actually acquire this knowledge which is so easily available to us.
Today, I will be grateful for the gospel, which is so clearly and consistently taught in the scriptures. I will strive to take advantage of this gift by studying, pondering, and internalizing the truths contained in the Bible and in the Book of Mormon.
