The Spirit of the Lord Did No More Preserve Them – Helaman 4:23-25

23 And because of their iniquity the church had begun to dwindle; and they began to disbelieve in the spirit of prophecy and in the spirit of revelation; and the judgments of God did stare them in the face.
24 And they saw that they had become weak, like unto their brethren, the Lamanites, and that the Spirit of the Lord did no more preserve them; yea, it had withdrawn from them because the Spirit of the Lord doth not dwell in unholy temples—
25 Therefore the Lord did cease to preserve them by his miraculous and matchless power, for they had fallen into a state of unbelief and awful wickedness; and they saw that the Lamanites were exceedingly more numerous than they, and except they should cleave unto the Lord their God they must unavoidably perish.

Self-awareness is so important and so difficult to achieve. Earlier in this chapter, Mormon tells us that the Nephites were guilty of boasting (Helaman 4:13). Later, he tells us that they discovered that “the strength of the Lamanites was as great as their strength, even man for man” (Helaman 4:26), which implies that they had previously thought they were superior. As Mormon teaches us in the passage above, we all need God’s help. No matter how strong, smart, and capable we might be, the challenges we face are too big to face alone.
How does God provide that help? Through the Spirit of the Lord. As Elder Gary E. Stevenson taught in the most recent general conference, “It is vital to our physical and spiritual safety that we keep the gift of the Holy Ghost…. Stay close to the Spirit, and the Spirit will stay close to you” (“How Does the Holy Ghost Help You?” General Conference, April 2017).
Unfortunately for this group of Nephites, they had not stayed close to the Spirit. They had begun “to disbelieve in the spirit of prophecy and in the spirit of revelation.” This rejection of the Holy Ghost and the accompanying wickedness in their behavior disqualified them for the protection of the Lord, “because the Spirit of the Lord doth not dwell in unholy temples.
Today, I will welcome the influence of the Holy Ghost into my life. I will remember that I need God’s strengthening and protecting power in my life, and I will strive to open my heart and my mind to His influence and to live in a way that will enable me to receive His power.
