Because of So Much Contention – Helaman 1:18

18 And it came to pass that because of so much contention and so much difficulty in the government, that they had not kept sufficient guards in the land of Zarahemla; for they had supposed that the Lamanites durst not come into the heart of their lands to attack that great city Zarahemla.

The Nephites were vulnerable in the heart of their land. Their capital city, Zarahemla was inadequately guarded. Why? “Because of so much contention and so much difficulty in the government,” Mormon tells us. They thought they were safe because of their strong border defenses, but the heart of their nation was rotting away and was vulnerable to attack.
The Savior said,”If a house be divided against itself, that house cannot stand” (Mark 3:25). And only a few chapters before the passage above, Captain Moroni reminded the chief priest, Pahoran, “God has said that the inward vessel shall be cleansed first, and then shall the outer vessel be cleansed also” (Alma 60:23).
Today, I will ensure that the “centers” of my life are strong. I will consider the state of my team at work, my family at home, and my own heart. I will remember that, if there is contention or unrest at the center of any organization, that organization is weak, no matter how strong their exterior defenses may appear. I will work on cleansing the inner vessel first, before I turn to the outer vessel.
