The Light and the Life of the World – Mosiah 16:9

9 He is the light and the life of the world; yea, a light that is endless, that can never be darkened; yea, and also a life which is endless, that there can be no more death.

As Abinadi teaches in the passage above, Jesus Christ is both the light and the the life of the world:

  • He is the light because He teaches us the truth. As we are blessed by His Atonement and receive the Holy Ghost, our minds are enlightened (D&C 6:15) and the darkness which may have accumulated in our minds is cast away (Alma 19:6). We see more clearly and can understand concepts which we would not have understood on our own (JS-H 1:74).
  • He is the life because His Atonement allows us to overcome physical and spiritual death. In our daily lives, the Atonement can help us live more comprehensively and more meaningfully (John 10:10). There are many who are physically alive but who are effectively dead inside because of their sins or because they have become overwhelmed by their trials. Jesus Christ can help them to live again (Ephesians 2:1-5). Perhaps this is why the scriptures tell us that we must be born again (Mosiah 27:25). We all lose some of the life that we had when we were born the first time. Through the Atonement, the Savior can make us alive again.
Today, I will remember that the Savior is not only the light and the life of the world but that He can also be my light and my life. When my mind is darkened or when I am discouraged, I will turn to Him in faith, knowing that He can enlighten my mind and invigorate my spirit.
