A Testimony unto the Father – 3 Nephi 18:5-7

5 And when the multitude had eaten and were filled, he said unto the disciples: Behold there shall one be ordained among you, and to him will I give power that he shall break bread and bless it and give it unto the people of my church, unto all those who shall believe and be baptized in my name.
6 And this shall ye always observe to do, even as I have done, even as I have broken bread and blessed it and given it unto you.
7 And this shall ye do in remembrance of my body, which I have shown unto you. And it shall be a testimony unto the Father that ye do always remember me. And if ye do always remember me ye shall have my Spirit to be with you.

This week I will focus on the sacrament in my scripture study. When the Savior appeared to the inhabitants of this continent following His death and resurrection, He administered the sacrament to them, just as He had done with His apostles in Jerusalem during the Last Supper only a few days earlier. He asked His disciples to bring bread and wine. He had the multitude sit down. He broke the bread, blessed it, and had them all eat. Before blessing the wine, he gave them the instructions in the passage above:
  1. The sacramental bread should be broken and blessed by one who is authorized by the Savior to do so.
  2. Those who have been baptized should “always” participate in this ordinance.
  3. When we partake of the sacrament, we should remember the Savior’s sacrifice on our behalf.
  4. By partaking of the sacrament, we testify to our Heavenly Father that we “always” remember His Son.
  5. If we always remember the Savior, we will have His Spirit to be with us.
I’m grateful for the blessing of participating in the sacrament each Sunday. This practice not only helps me to remember and fulfill my baptismal covenant, but also gives me a tangible way to witness, or testify, that I have not forgotten the Savior or the relationship I have with Him.
