14 And it came to pass that I, Nephi, beheld the power of the Lamb of God, that it descended upon the saints of the church of the Lamb, and upon the covenant people of the Lord, who were scattered upon all the face of the earth; and they were armed with righteousness and with the power of God in great glory.
In Nephi’s vision, powerful forces and organizations promoted wickedness. In contrast, the members of the church of Jesus Christ were comparatively few. But, as he describes in the passage above, they had access to God’s power.
It is easy to recognize power in numbers. Large organizations, political movements, and even mobs can wield great power, particularly destructive power. But it can be harder to recognize the power of a small number of people. Like the boy with Elisha, we may need the Lord to open our eyes so that we can see the strength of our position. (See 2 Kings 6:16-17.) As Nephi saw, the strength of the church is not a function of its numbers. Rather, it is a function of the righteousness of its members, which in turn unlocks the power of God in their lives.
Today, I will remember that the church is far more powerful than its numbers might suggest. I will remember that, when we are endowed with God’s power, we can overcome the evil influences around us and accomplish the work of the Lord.
