26 And not many days hence the Son of God shall come in his glory; and his glory shall be the glory of the Only Begotten of the Father, full of grace, equity, and truth, full of patience, mercy, and long-suffering, quick to hear the cries of his people and to answer their prayers.
I’m impressed with the contrast in this verse between the Savior’s patience and His responsiveness. On the one hand, he is patient and long-suffering with us. He will call us many times and will keep calling even if we don’t answer for a long time. On the other hand, He is quick to respond to us when we reach out to Him. This obviously doesn’t mean that we will always get what we pray for. But it does mean that He is always mindful of us, that He listens to us, and that He is eager to bless us.
Consider the imagery in the following passage from the Revelation of St. John: “Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me” (Revelation 3:20).
I’m grateful for a Savior who is patient, who trusts me and who persists in trying to help me even when I am slow to hear His voice or heed His counsel. I am also grateful that He is quick to hear and respond when I reach out to Him. I hope to follow His example and to respond promptly when He calls me.
