27 Now when our hearts were depressed, and we were about to turn back, behold, the Lord comforted us, and said: Go amongst thy brethren, the Lamanites, and bear with patience thine afflictions, and I will give unto you success.
When Ammon and his brothers wanted to preach the gospel to the Lamanites, their friends and neighbors were horrified. “What good would that do?” they asked. “Do you think you can preach the gospel of peace and faith to a group of people so violent and savage?” They had plenty of basis for skepticism. Only a few years earlier, the people of Limhi had been in bondage to the Lamanites because Limhi’s grandfather had naively trusted the Lamanite king (Mosiah 9:6-10).
But the Lord gave them a different answer: “Go amongst thy brethren, the Lamanites, and bear with patience thine afflictions, and I will give unto you success.” He didn’t promise that success would come easily. In fact, He acknowledged that they would have afflictions. But He promised them success if they would patiently endure those afflictions.
Today, I will strive to follow the example of Ammon and his brothers. As I pursue righteous goals, I will patiently endure the afflictions that come along the way. I will keep my eyes focused on the prize and will not give up when I encounter roadblocks or barriers.
