It Is the Most Desirable Above All Things – 1 Nephi 11:22-23

22 And I answered him, saying: Yea, it is the love of God, which sheddeth itself abroad in the hearts of the children of men; wherefore, it is the most desirable above all things.
23 And he spake unto me, saying: Yea, and the most joyous to the soul.

The past few days, I’ve been writing about some of the attributes of God. I’ve written that He is unchanging and that He knows everything including what will happen in the future. I’ve written that the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost are perfectly united. And yesterday, I wrote about God’s perfect adherence to justice.
Today, I want to write about His love.
Near the beginning of the Book of Mormon, the prophet Lehi described a dream in which he had wandered through a “dark and dreary wilderness” (1 Nephi 8:4). He prayed for guidance and was led to a tree. The fruit of this tree was whiter than anything he had ever seen, and upon tasting the fruit, he discovered that “it was most sweet, above all that I ever before tasted” (1 Nephi 8:11). His son Nephi later had a vision in which he learned that the fruit symbolized the love of God. As he wrote in the passage above, that love is “the most desirable above all things,” and “the most joyous to the soul.”
Throughout the Book of Mormon, we read about people experiencing the love of God and testifying that they were filled with joy when they felt that love.
As Henry B. Eyring taught:

By serving Him this day, you will come to know Him better. You will feel His love and appreciation. You would not want to delay receiving that blessing. And feeling His love will draw you back to His service, wiping away both complacency and discouragement (“This Day,” General Conference, April 2007).

Today, I will remember how much my Heavenly Father loves His children and how much joy it gives them to feel that love. I will strive to help others experience His love, and I will also strive to follow His example by expressing my love to my children.
