28 And in fine, wo unto all those who tremble, and are angry because of the truth of God! For behold, he that is built upon the rock receiveth it with gladness; and he that is built upon a sandy foundation trembleth lest he shall fall.
Two negative emotions are associated with rejecting God’s word in this verse: anger (trembling because of the truth) and fear (trembling lest you shall fall). Both emotions indicate that we are on unstable ground. What can we do to ensure that we are standing on solid ground and able to receive the truth of God with gladness?
- Keep the commandments, and repent quickly when we sin. We can be confident and optimistic when we know we are at peace with God (see 1 Nephi 22:17).
- Be prepared. “If ye are prepared, ye shall not fear” (D&C 38:30).
- Remember the Savior. “If your eye be single to my glory, your whole bodies shall be filled with light” (D&C 88:67).
Today I will build on a solid foundation by being obedient to God, by preparing myself prayerfully for the day, and by focusing my mind on the Savior and on His gospel.
In my life (and likely in others) it seems that times of anger or fear are usually accompanied or precipitated by a lack of humility. The lack of humility causes us to reject the word of God, (that which we know is true and that which we could know is true if we were humble and receptive), which perpetuates feelings of anger and fear. This cycle begins to weaken our foundation until we humble ourselves and seek God's will. This scripture is a great reminder to me when I'm angry or fearful to evaluate my relationship with God and my willingness to accept and follow His will. Thanks
