1 Nephi 20:17 Who Teacheth Thee to Profit

17 And thus saith the Lord, thy Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel; I have sent him, the Lord thy God who teacheth thee to profit, who leadeth thee by the way thou shouldst go, hath done it.
(1 Nephi 20:17)

Heavenly Father wants us to be successful in life.  Of course we have trials and difficulties–that’s part of the mortal experience.  Ultimately, though, His goal is to help us become proficient at living wisely and happily.  Consider the following:

  • We are promised that if we follow the commandments, we will receive “peace in this world” as well as “eternal life in the world to come.”  (D&C 59:23)
  • The Lord taught that another word for “commandments” is “directions” for how to live in a way that will lead to salvation.  (D&C 82:8-9)
  • We learn from the prophet Alma that “wickedness never was happiness.”  (Alma 41:10)
  • In the very next verse in this chapter, the Lord says that those who keep his commandments have  peace “as a river” and righteousness “as the waves of the sea.”  (2 Nephi 20:18)
Knowing that God’s goal is to help us live happily and successfully can give us a different perspective on His commandments.  If we think of them as “directions” or ” instructions” rather than as “restrictions,” we will learn not only to accept God’s commandments graciously, but even to seek out His commandments. We will desire the blessing of receiving “commandments not a few,” (D&C 59:4) knowing that obedience to God’s commandments increases our internal peace, our ability to act, and our happiness.
Today, I will seek direction from my Father in Heaven and let Him teach me to “profit.”
