As we commemorate the birth of Jesus Christ this week, let’s remember what He accomplished before, during, and after His mortal ministry.
On January 1, 2000, leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints published a brief document entitled “The Living Christ,” which emphasizes that the Savior’s life “neither began in Bethlehem nor concluded on Calvary.” Here are some truths about the Savior which appear in that document, together with relevant blog posts:
- He was the Great Jehovah of the Old Testament: What Is the Significance of the Name “Jehovah?”
- He taught us how to live by word and by example: Why Is Jesus Called “the Author and the Finisher of Our Faith?”
- He gave His life to atone for our sins: Ascension, Descension, and Comprehension.
- He rose from the grave: Redeemed, Reunited, Restored, Resurrected – Alma 11:40-45.
- He subsequently ministered to His “other sheep” on the American continent: Other Sheep I Have – 3 Nephi 15:21, 24.
- He later appeared to Joseph Smith to initiate the “dispensation of the fulness of times:” The Stem, the Rod, and the Root.
- He lives today and leads His church: He Who Liveth.
- He will one day return to the earth: What Does the Book of Mormon Teach About the Second Coming of Jesus Christ?

The Creator
All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. John 1:3 The scriptures teach that Jesus Christ created the heavens and the earth under the direction of the Father. “Worlds without number have I created,” God told Moses, “…and by the Son I created them” (Moses 1:33).…
The Healer
During the Savior’s mortal ministry, He was known as a miraculous healer. And great multitudes came unto him, having with them those that were lame, blind, dumb, maimed, and many others, and cast them down at Jesus’ feet; and he healed them: Matthew 15:30 Jesus also healed unseen wounds. To the man who was paralyzed, He first…
The Teacher
“Rabbi,” said Nicodemus to Jesus, “we know that thou art a teacher come from God” (John 3:2). Good teachers are responsive to the needs of their students. They ask questions and make observations that stimulate thought. Consider, for example, how the Savior turned the following events into teaching opportunities: When His disciples were quibbling about…
The Friend
At the Last Supper, Jesus urged His disciples to love each other as He loved them. He explained that we demonstrate that love by making sacrifices, and He gave an extraordinary example: Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. John 15:13 Earlier in the meal, Peter had vowed to lay…
The Deliverer
Jesus Christ sets us free. Early in His earthly ministry, He quoted a passage from Isaiah describing His mission. One aspect of that mission was “to preach deliverance to the captives” (Luke 4:18, Isaiah 61:1). One thing which holds us captive is our sins. Paraphrasing another passage from Isaiah, the apostle Paul rejoices that Jesus…
The Living Christ and the Book of Mormon
The Living Christ: The Testimony of the Apostles is a proclamation published by leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on 1 January 2000. The document speaks of the Savior’s mission before birth, during His mortal ministry, and after His death and resurrection, including in our day. It also testifies that He…
