Mosiah 23 – Alma’s People Establish a City, Fall Captive to the Lamanites

Mosiah 22Mosiah 24

After escaping from King Noah, Alma and his people began to build a city. Their happiness was short-lived, however. When a group of Lamanites, led by Alma’s former colleague Amulon, discovers them, they find themselves in bondage, just like the people of Limhi.

Chapter Outline

  1. Alma and his people travel to a new place and build a city. He instructs them not to have a king. (v. 1-20)
  2. Editorial note: God tries our patience and our faith (v. 21-24)
  3. The Lamanites, led by Amulon, take control of the city (v. 25-39)

My Takeaways

  1. Authority is a mechanism for transferring trust from one person to another.
  2. Trials enable us to prove ourselves and to become stronger.
  3. We can calm our fears by turning to the Savior and trusting in his delivering power.

He Consecrated All Their Priests and All Their Teachers – Mosiah 23:16-18

16 And now, Alma was their high priest, he being the founder of their church. 17 And it came to pass that none received authority to preach or to teach except it were by him from God. Therefore he consecrated all their priests and all their teachers; and none were consecrated except they were just…

Ye Shall Not Esteem One Flesh Above Another – Mosiah 23:6-7

6 And the people were desirous that Alma should be their king, for he was beloved by his people. 7 But he said unto them: Behold, it is not expedient that we should have a king; for thus saith the Lord: Ye shall not esteem one flesh above another, or one man shall not think…

“He Trieth Their Patience” – Mosiah 23:21

21 Nevertheless the Lord seeth fit to chasten his people; yea, he trieth their patience and their faith. (Mosiah 23:21) Why does the Lord try our patience? One reason is to allow us to demonstrate our level of commitment. Before the earth was created, the Savior defined the purpose of our mortal life in these…

What Is the Relationship Between Faith and Patience?

After the Lord warned Alma that the armies of King Noah were preparing to attack his people, he led them into the wilderness for 8 days, and they began to establish a new city (Mosiah 23:1-5). They were unified and diligent, and Mormon tells us that they “began to prosper exceedingly in the land.” But…

God Remembered Rachel

Rachel was in love. At least, that’s what I infer from the biblical text. We read that Jacob loved Rachel and that he worked seven years for the right to marry her, “and they seemed unto him but a few days, for the love he had to her” (Genesis 29:20). But after her father tricked Jacob into also marrying…

“I Did Eat”

The first step in abandoning a sin is recognizing that it exists. If we are unwilling to admit that we have done something wrong, we are likely to continue making the same mistake over and over again. When God approached Adam and Eve after their transgression in the Garden of Eden, He gave them the…

Her Perfect Work

“Let patience have her perfect work,” says James. When you go through a trial, remember that it will end when its purpose is accomplished. Let the trial do its job, proving you and stretching you as part of God’s plan for your happiness.

The Two Great Commandments

After delivering the children of Israel from slavery in Egypt, the Lord gave them many commandments through the prophet Moses. Here are two of them: “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might” (Deuteronomy 6:5). “Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself” (Leviticus 19:18). A couple of observations about these two commandments:…

Preside

After Alma organized the church at the waters of Mormon, he and his people fled for their lives from the armies of King Noah. Arriving in a new land, which they called the land of Helam, they began to organize themselves as an independent community. After warning his people to be careful whom they chose…

“Build Up Cities”

When the Lord warned Nephi to flee from his brothers, he did not go alone. He took with him everyone who “believed in the warnings and the revelations of God” (1 Nephi 5:5-6). They traveled many days in the wilderness and chose a place to settle, where they constructed buildings, planted crops, and established a new community.…

After Much Tribulation

Hard times happen for a reason. The changes we need to make, the growth God wants us to experience, don’t come easily. When life seems particularly difficult, we may be experiencing a “growth spurt.” When the prophet Abinadi was executed by King Noah, Alma, who had been one of Noah’s priests, was horrified at what…
