Alma’s former colleague, Amulon, gains influence with the king of the Lamanites and places taskmasters over Alma and his people. He also forbids them to pray. God blesses them, first by easing their burdens, and then by miraculously setting them free.
Chapter Outline
- Noah’s priests become teachers to the Lamanites (v. 1-7)
- Amulon persecutes Alma’s people and forbids them to pray (v. 8-12)
- God eases their burdens (v. 13-15)
- God delivers them from bondage (v. 16-20)
- Alma’s people give thanks and travel to Zarahemla (v. 21-25)
My Takeaways
- Keep praying, even when you don’t immediately receive the blessing you seek.
- Patience and faith go together. Faith would not be worth very much if it were transient, lasting only a short period of time.
- We need to express gratitude, not just feel it.

What Should I Do When My Prayers Aren’t Answered?
After preaching the gospel, baptizing hundreds of people, and organizing the church in the land of Mormon, the prophet Alma led his people into the wilderness. They traveled for eight days, arriving at a beautiful place where they decided to settle (Mosiah 23:1-4). However, they soon fell into captivity, forced to labor under the supervision…

Prisoners of Hope
Captivity does not imply hopelessness. The prophet Zechariah proclaimed to his people, who had only recently been delivered from bondage, “Turn you to the strong hold, ye prisoners of hope.” Then, he added a promise from the Lord: “even to day do I declare that I will render double unto thee” (Zechariah 9:12). When Alma and his people were in bondage,…
Cast Thy Burden Upon the Lord
Based on: Psalm 55 Core message: God will ease our burdens as we draw nearer to Him. Even if He doesn’t take them away, He can make them seem light. Related Book of Mormon passages: Mosiah 24:14-15, Alma 33:23
Taskmasters
Are we increasing other people’s burdens or lightening them? That’s a pretty good heuristic for many of the decisions we make. Jacob and his family thrived in Egypt, with the support of his son Joseph, who was governor over the land, second only to Pharaoh. (See Genesis 41:40-41.) But a few generations later, a new…
