Mormon 7 – Mormon’s Final Message to the Lamanites

Mormon 6Mormon 8

Mormon ends his account of his life with a brief and direct message to the descendants of his enemies, the Lamanites. He testifies that they are part of the house of Israel, that they must abandon their sins to be saved, and that Jesus Christ has made possible their resurrection and redemption. Then, he invites them to repent and be baptized, so that “it shall be well with you in the day of judgment.”

Chapter Outline

  1. “Know ye…” (v. 1-7)
  2. “Therefore repent, and be baptized” (v. 8-10)

My Takeaways

  1. Replace patterns of thought which create animosity with patterns which build peace.
  2. Jesus Christ has risen, and more importantly He is risen, and is able to heal us.

“Lay Down Your Weapons of War” – Mormon 7:4

After describing the final battle in which his people were destroyed, Mormon writes a final testimony and admonition to the descendants of his enemies, the Lamanites. He had led his armies in battle against the Lamanites for nearly 60 years, but he had also spent significant time studying and summarizing the thousand-year history of his…

“Swallowed Up in Christ” – Mosiah 16:8

I’ve been thinking today about Abinadi’s testimony that “the sting of death is swallowed up in Christ” (Mosiah 16:8). Abinadi was likely familiar with Isaiah’s prophecy that the Lord would one day “swallow up death in victory” (Isaiah 25:8). He knew that this passage referred to the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Because of His resurrection,…

“He Is Risen”

Jesus prophesied that He would be killed and would rise again the third day. His disciples didn’t understand, but angels later reminded them of this prophecy. Nephi wrote that Jesus would rise “with healing in his wings.” He has power to heal each of us.

“Therefore Repent”

Mormon lists a number of things he wants the Lamanites to know. Then, he tells them what he wants them to do with that knowledge: repent and be baptized. Many of the most important truths we know can and should be converted into practical action.

If Ye Believe This – Mormon 7:9

9 For behold, this is written for the intent that ye may believe that; and if ye believe that ye will believe this also; and if ye believe this ye will know concerning your fathers, and also the marvelous works which were wrought by the power of God among them. (Mormon 7:9) First, a couple…

One God

In his final testimony, Mormon emphasizes that the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost are “one God” (Mormon 7:7). This echoes the testimony of Nephi: And now, behold, this is the doctrine of Christ, and the only and true doctrine of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost, which is…
