Moroni responded to an attempted insurrection led by a man named Amalackiah by ripping his coat and writing on it the words, “In memory of our God, our religion and freedom, and our peace, our wives, and our children.” He turned it into a flag, which he called the Title of Liberty. He traveled throughout the land with his flag, recruiting people to defend freedom. After his forces defeated Amalackiah’s followers, he raised the Title of Liberty on every tower in the land.
Chapter Outline

My Takeaways
- Never underestimate the influence that one person can have.
- Sometimes, words aren’t enough, and leaders need to find creative ways to galvanize other people to action.
- When a leader bases his or her decisions on true principles, people are more likely to develop their own independent conviction that their cause is just.
- We all need reminders of our values and of the covenants we’ve made.

Your Influence – Alma 46:9
Never underestimate the influence that one person can have. Mormon opens his account of the seven-year war between the Nephites and the Lamanites by focusing on two leaders: Amalickiah and Moroni. After describing the influence Amalickiah had over many of the Nephites and the disruptive effect of his leadership, Mormon explains what we can learn…
They Were Seeking for Power – Alma 46:4, 19-20
4 And Amalickiah was desirous to be a king; and those people who were wroth were also desirous that he should be their king; and they were the greater part of them the lower judges of the land, and they were seeking for power. 5 And they had been led by the flatteries of Amalickiah,…
Alma 46:8 How Quick the Children of Men Do Forget the Lord Their God
8 Thus we see how quick the children of men do forget the Lord their God, yea, how quick to do iniquity, and to be led away by the evil one. (Alma 46:8) Why do we forget so easily? The Nephites had just been delivered from their enemies and had expressed gratitude for their success.…

What Was the Title of Liberty?
Captain Moroni was appalled at the listless response of his people to a serious threat to their freedom. A year earlier, he had led the Nephite armies to victory over an enormous invading army. His forces had been victorious because they were “inspired by a better cause” than their enemies (Alma 43:45): To support their…
How Can I Be a More Effective Leader?
We are all leaders, whether we have a formal position of authority or not. We all have the opportunity to influence others and to inspire them to positive action. Here are some principles of effective leadership I have learned from the Book of Mormon: “I trust there remaineth an effectual struggle to be made.” Great…

19 And when Moroni had said these words, he went forth among the people, waving the rent part of his garment in the air, that all might see the writing which he had written upon the rent part, and crying with a loud voice, saying: 20 Behold, whosoever will maintain this title upon the land,…

12 And it came to pass that he rent his coat; and he took a piece thereof, and wrote upon it—In memory of our God, our religion, and freedom, and our peace, our wives, and our children—and he fastened it upon the end of a pole. (Alma 46:12) We gain courage by remembering the things…

What Does the Book of Mormon Teach About Jacob (Israel)?
Soon after Lehi led his family into the wilderness, he sent his four sons back to Jerusalem to retrieve a sacred record engraved on brass plates (1 Nephi 3:2-3). He Caused the Title of Liberty to Be Hoisted upon Every Tower – Alma 46:36
36 And it came to pass also, that he caused the title of liberty to be hoisted upon every tower which was in all the land, which was possessed by the Nephites; and thus Moroni planted the standard of liberty among the Nephites. (Alma 46:36) We all need reminders of our values and of the…

The Remnant Shall Return
Isaiah’s prophecy about the remnant of Israel returning to God assures that no matter how far they are from home, they are not out of God’s sight. Book of Mormon authors echo this sentiment: God is mindful of you, wherever you are, and you can come home.
King-men
Why would a person vote to eliminate their own freedom? I’ve been intrigued the past couple of weeks by the children of Israel, who insisted on having a king, even after the prophet Samuel warned them of the terrible consequences of this decision: Their children would suffer, they would lose control over their possessions, and…
Your Healer
At a place which the children of Israel called Marah (“bitter”), because the water was undrinkable, the Lord taught Moses how to make the water sweet. He didn’t have Moses use his rod or simply speak some words. Instead, He showed Moses a tree, which when placed in the water, made it sweet. Moses then…
