The Nephites defend the refugees as the Lamanites attack. Tens of thousands of Lamanites die, as well as many Nephites, and the Lamanites are driven out.
Mormon concludes this section of the book by contrasting the “incomprehensible joy” experienced by the people of Ammon with the terrible sorrow of those who lost loved ones in battle.
Chapter Outline
- A great battle: tens of thousands of Lamanites and many Nephites are killed (v. 1-7)
- Mormon’s conclusion: Much joy and much sorrow in the first fifteen years of the reign of the judges (v. 8-14)
My Takeaways
- When bad things happen, choose to be solemn—serious, dignified, and sincere.
- The only permanent inequality is caused by sin. Those who choose not to receive God’s grace must live with the consequences of their wrong choices.

Jacob named the…
