Alma 27 – Mission to the Lamanites: Immigration to Zarahemla

Alma 26Alma 28

The unbelieving Lamanites begin attacking and killing believers again. Ammon suggests to the king that the believers relocate to Zarahemla and live among the Nephites. The king is skeptical, but agrees to go after Ammon prays and receives confirmation that this is the Lord’s will. They are welcomed by the Nephites and given the land of Jershon as a place to settle.

Chapter Outline

  1. Ammon proposes that the believers relocate to Zarahemla and the king agrees (v. 1-15)
  2. Sons of Mosiah reunited with Alma (v. 16-20)
  3. The believers settle in the land of Jershon and are known as the people of Ammon (v. 21-30)

My Takeaways

  1. Genuine compassion motivates action.
  2. We should be willing to go wherever the Lord leads us.
  3. God expects us to look after the most vulnerable people among us.
  4. We should be honest in small things as well as in things that seem more significant.

“As Though They Were Angels”

Not all angels are from the other side of the veil. The Lamanite converts treated the sons of Mosiah “as though they were angels sent from God,” and rightly so. We can be grateful for people who serve as angels to us, lifting us closer to God.

They Were Moved with Compassion – Alma 27:4-5

4 Now when Ammon and his brethren saw this work of destruction among those whom they so dearly beloved, and among those who had so dearly beloved them—for they were treated as though they were angels sent from God to save them from everlasting destruction—therefore, when Ammon and his brethren saw this great work of…

Alma 27:4-13 Inquire of the Lord, and If He Saith Unto Us Go, We Will Go

If the Lord Saith unto Us Go… – Alma 27:7-10

7 And Ammon said: I will go and inquire of the Lord, and if he say unto us, go down unto our brethren, will ye go?8 And the king said unto him: Yea, if the Lord saith unto us go, we will go down unto our brethren, and we will be their slaves until we…

Uninhibited Joy

Ammon was overwhelmed by joy when he and his brothers were reunited with Alma. We need to govern our emotions but not stifle them. Some emotions are meant to be felt fully, without reservations or bashfulness. God is pleased when we feel pure joy.

What Can I Do to Feel More Joy?

When Ammon and his three brothers were reunited with their good friend Alma after fourteen years of separation, they were all filled with joy. Ammon, however, had an unusually dramatic reaction to this meeting: He was swallowed up in the joy of his God, even to the exhausting of his strength; and he fell…to the…

What Does the Book of Mormon Teach About Refugees?

The king of the Lamanites was troubled. His people had accepted the gospel of Jesus Christ after being taught by a group of Nephite missionaries. They had made a solemn oath never to fight again. Their own people had turned against them and were slaughtering them mercilessly. Now, Ammon, the leader of the missionaries, had…

Perfectly Honest – Alma 27:27

27 And they were among the people of Nephi, and also numbered among the people who were of the church of God. And they were also distinguished for their zeal towards God, and also towards men; for they were perfectly honest and upright in all things; and they were firm in the faith of Christ,…

Jacob, Ammon, and the Prodigal Son

What could be more joyful than to be with loved ones? And when you’ve been separated for a time, how joyful is your reunion? After more than twenty years apart from his twin brother, Esau was enthusiastic to see him again. He had been angry the last time they were together, but his heart had…

“Whatsoever God Hath Said Unto Thee, Do.”

It takes faith to act on revelation we have received. It also takes faith to act on revelation received by someone else. When Jacob told Leah and Rachel that an angel had instructed them to move, they responded favorably. As difficult as it might have been to leave their home, they responded, “Whatsoever God hath…

“Swallowed Up” – Alma 27:28

Isaiah prophesied that God would “swallow up death in victory” (Isaiah 25:8). Aaron borrowed this terminology when he taught the king of the Lamanites that Christ would “[break] the bands of death,,,and that the sting of death should be swallowed up in the hopes of glory” (Alma 22:14). This was more than a theoretical concept.…

New Testament Parallels

Finding Favor

Luke tells us that as a young man, “Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man” (Luke 2:52). He was following in the footsteps of his mother. The angel Gabriel had assured her, “Thou hast found favour with God” (Luke 1:28-30). What is God’s favor, and how can we find…

Girt with Truth

Telling the truth isn’t always easy, but it beats the alternative. Paul taught that honesty is like a belt which holds our spiritual armor in place. God is perfectly truthful, and the Anti-Nephi-Lehies were distinguished by their honesty. Choose to be honest with yourself and others. Gird yourself with truth.
