Nephi’s Isaiah Synthesis: 2 Nephi 29

This is the second of three blog posts about how Nephi incorporated content from Isaiah, particularly chapters 2-14, into his writings in 2 Nephi 28-30.

2 Nephi 29

• The Publication of the Book of Mormon (v. 1-2): In a future time, God will “proceed to do a marvelous work” (see Isaiah 29:14), in order to “set [His] hand again the second time to recover [His] people” (see Isaiah 11:11). To accomplish this work, His words to Nephi and his descendants will “hiss forth unto the ends of the earth” (see Isaiah 5:26). God promised to remember Nephi’s seed, “and that the words of your seed should proceed forth out of my mouth unto your seed” (compare Isaiah 59:21).
• The Rejection (v. 3-5): Many people will say “A Bible! A Bible! We have got a Bible, and there cannot be any more Bible.” This is an extension of Nephi’s warning from the prior chapter, “Wo be unto him that shall say: We have received the word of God, and we need no more of the word of God, for we have enough!” (2 Nephi 28:29).
• More Nations than One (v. 6-11): God remembers those who are “upon the isles of the sea” (see Isaiah 11:11). He speaks to people “in the east and in the west, and in the north, and in the south” and they each provide their testimony (see Isaiah 43:5-6, 10).
• Nephites and Jews (v. 12-13): Nephi speaks specifically of two nations—the Nephites and the Jews—saying that they will have each other’s words and that the lost tribes of Israel and “all nations of the earth” will also share their written testimonies.
• The Gathering (v. 14): The house of Israel will be “gathered home unto the lands of their possessions” (compare Isaiah 14:1-2). He also promises to gather His word in one. Those who fight against God’s word and against His people will learn that God remembers His promises to Abraham. This is the central message of Isaiah 2-14. Israel may at times feel abandoned, but they are not forgotten (see Isaiah 14:1, 32).

So Nephi’s message in this chapter is that the words of his family will one day be united with the testimonies of the Jews, as evidence that God speaks to all nations. God’s fulfillment of His covenant to Abraham includes gathering the children of Israel from all nations of the earth as well as gathering and unifying their words. Nephi’s extensive use of Isaiah’s words in the chapter serves as an example of this gathering and unifying.

Today I will be grateful for God’s intergenerational commitment to His covenants and international commitment to His children. I will open my heart to testimonies from people of many different backgrounds, knowing that God will gather all of His words in the end.
