More Treasures Than One

In August 1836, the Church’s debts weighed heavily on the minds of Joseph Smith and other church leaders. As four of them traveled in the eastern United States, they became excited about a large sum of money reportedly available in Salem, Massachusetts. Joseph Smith received a revelation in Salem in which the Lord redirected their minds from money to other important goals.

“I have much treasure in this city for you, for the benefit of Zion,” He said, “and many people in this city, whom I will gather out in due time for the benefit of Zion” (Doctrine and Covenants 111:2). Money would have alleviated the immediate pressures on the Church, but finding more committed members would strengthen the Church far more in the long run. So He urged them to “form acquaintance with men in this city” (v. 3). Make the effort to build some relationships, instead of being narrowly focused on financial goals.

He also told them to “inquire diligently concerning the more ancient inhabitants and founders of this city.” He explained this admonition by saying, “For there are more treasures than one for you in this city” (Doctrine and Covenants 111:9-10). On the same day this revelation was received, Sidney Rigdon and Oliver Cowdery visited the East India Marine Society Museum. The group visited a number of other historical sites in Salem and Boston during their three weeks in the city. Learning about the history of that part of the country surely enriched their lives and helped them feel more connected to the people.

“Concern not yourselves about your debts,” the Lord counseled, “for I will give you power to pay them” (Doctrine and Covenants 111:5). Sometimes, in order to find and enjoy treasures, we have to stop worrying so much about the treasures we wish we had. When we trust God to help us financially, we free our minds and hearts to focus on eternal treasures, including learning and relationships.

“Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth,” the Savior taught, “but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, … for where your treasure is, there will your heart be also” (3 Nephi 13:19-21; Matthew 6:19-21). By helping Joseph Smith and his colleagues to see the variety of treasures available to them in Salem, the Lord helped them to open their hearts to treasures far more valuable than the money they had hoped to obtain.

Today, I will open my eyes to treasures God has made available to me. I will remember that blessings come in many forms, and I will strive to acquire and enjoy all types of blessings, especially the ones of eternal significance.
