Light, Life, and Law

Jesus said, “I am the light of the world” (John 8:12; John 9:5). He promised that if we follow Him, we will not walk in darkness.

He also declared, “I am … the life.” He promised His friend Martha, “he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live” (John 11:25; see also John 14:6).

The Book of Mormon prophet Abinadi combined these two concepts. He testified to King Noah and his priests:

He is the light and the life of the world; yea, a light that is endless, that can never be darkened; yea, and also a life which is endless, that there can be no more death.

Mosiah 16:9

After the Savior’s crucifixion, a group of people sitting in thick darkness heard Him use Abinadi’s phrase to introduce Himself: “I am the light and the life of the world” (3 Nephi 9:18). He made the same declaration when He visited the temple in Bountiful in His resurrected body (3 Nephi 11:11).

Subsequently, during His ministry among the Nephites and the Lamanites, He added a third component to this description: “I am the law, and the light,” He said (3 Nephi 15:9), echoing the ancient proverb:

The commandment is a lamp; and the law is light; and reproofs of instruction are the way of life:

Proverbs 6:23

In a December 1832 revelation, the Lord combines all three concepts and characterizes them as interrelated:

The light which shineth, which giveth you light, is through him who enlighteneth your eyes, which is the same light that quickeneth your understandings;

Which light proceedeth forth from the presence of God to fill the immensity of space—

The light which is in all things, which giveth life to all things, which is the law by which all things are governed, even the power of God who sitteth upon his throne, who is in the bosom of eternity, who is in the midst of all things.

Doctrine and Covenants 88:11-13

What does this mean for us?

  • Light: Jesus helps us to see clearly, to recognize truth and goodness.
  • Life: He empowers us to flourish, to be vibrant and enthusiastic.
  • Law: He guides us to make wise decisions, avoid destructive behaviors, and channel our energy toward eternal goals.

Today, I will be grateful for the light, life, and law which come from Jesus. I will recognize the interdependence of these three concepts: because of Him, we see more clearly, we act more vigorously, and we discipline ourselves more wisely.
