This week, I set a goal to learn how to deepen my reverence to God. This goal was prompted by the following passage from Doctrine and Covenants 76:
Thus we saw the glory of the celestial, which excels in all things—where God, even the Father, reigns upon his throne forever and ever;
Before whose throne all things bow in humble reverence, and give him glory forever and ever.
Doctrine and Covenants 76:92-93
In the most recent general conference, Elder Ulisses Soares interpreted this passage to mean that “reverence toward our Heavenly Father and His Son, Jesus Christ, is an essential virtue for those who attain the celestial kingdom” (“Reverence for Sacred Things,” General Conference, April 2025).
Elder Soares offered several practical ways to become more reverent, including:
- Be careful how we portray the Father and the Son in words and in images, particularly when using tools like artificial intelligence to generate content.
- Be intentional in our temple worship. As we change into white clothing to participate in temple ordinances, we can strive to feel the same awe Moses experienced on Mount Horeb, as he removed the shoes from his feet (Exodus 3:4-5).
- Transform our homes into sanctuaries of faith by eliminating worldly influences, engaging in scripture study and prayer, and diligently striving to honor our covenants with God.
- Participate faithfully in worship services at church, including singing the hymns and avoiding distractions like cell phones.
Nephi reported, “I…did go into the mount oft, and I did pray oft unto the Lord; wherefore the Lord showed unto me great things” (1 Nephi 18:3).
Today, I will fill my life with activities that turn my mind and heart to God and help me reflect greater reverence toward Them.
